I was myself involved in a bus crash on the night of the 1st to the 2nd of April 2008- We were going from Sharm El Sheik to the Sinai mountains for a nice walk- We travelled by nightand never reached our destination because our bus overturned somewhere in the mountain 20min after passing the village of Dahab.

The main reason we crashed I think was due to an excessively fast and uncautious driving.

I wish that people and the media speak more about these type of accident because accidents such as mine happened before mine did and I didn't know about it and accident happened after my accidents and the people probably hadn't heard about my accident.

We, as tourists, should be informed, these accidents should be reported in the tourist brochures so people/tourists are given the choice to take the risks to go by bus/coach or not take the risks.

If we are not informed, we do take the risks without even being aware of it.

I was nearly paralysed and find it a big shame the media around the world don't really speak about these accidents altough they do about plane crashes.

If we do a count, the number of bus crashes that occrured in the sinai mountains area over the last few years, sums up to surely as many victims thanthe one of a plane crash.

Let's please give people the choice by informing them.

This accident happened on the 1st day (night actually) of my holiday and I, as a result, didn't get to see any of the beautiful Egypt at all.

As i see..all are true and all is true ! Its waiving safety standards and concepts inEgypt .

Driving became the only resource for making a living for a wide section of citizens. Drivers are mostly low level education and socially loaded w bad habits (notall ).

Coach buses and safari Toyotas and quads and motorbikes , all of this isrelated w tourism but not well planned regarding safety of the clients who payfor losing their lives.

As for roads, as an egyptian , i never trusted the roadto Sharm since 80s till now it needs a ministry for this specialty w funds and i am sure lots of egyptians will find work .

Tourists and egyptians both suffer this phenomenon (traffic and roads of egypt)..i guess it will happen that a genious will invent a computer game (drive egypt) with scores and all sorts of strange attitudes and traffic sudden events.

Drivers here developed the daily stress syndrome that burns the nerves and brain concentration ..its not just the traffic jam its the system of adapting to the NO SYSTEM with all its consequent evolution of new manners and techniques in driving that no one would understand from outside this system ..

I ve been to europe and now i understand that Egyptian roads and traffic isreally one of a kind ..!!

Let me start with my deepest condolences for the family's of the victims.

Please excuse the people sent there comments defending and thinking they are helping there countries image like so.

It is very clear that the site here is not anti Egypt what so ever, for those who can read and understand English well can see how passionate you are about Egypt and Egyptians and how you are not bios what so ever or trying to do any harm but to raise a very important issue.

We middle eastern tend to be very emotional and protective which leads to discussing the Palestinian Israeli cause when talking about car accidents that we all suffer from.

You are doing no more than the campaign that already exists on the media over here and they call it, the Asphalt Bleeding.

Let me tell my fellow country men and women, YES accidents every where and YES people die every day from Road accidents. BUT 2 things the guys here trying to discuss and raise awareness about:

1- Medical response, as in Time and trained personal and equipment.

2- Regulations and monitoring system for drivers and buses to prevent accidents or at least decrease the numbers of such event.

I would like to tell the Web developers here, that the ministry of health is trying to address this issue and they are training newly graduated university students to be paramedics.

Also there are new Ambulances arrived to Egypt as a grant from over seas and it can be seen all over Cairo main streets are on standby with a different caliber of paramedics personal but I dont know if other cities are equiped too with those ambulances.

I'm not a supporter to our governement what so ever, neither I am an official, I'm just a concerned rassional thinking citizen.

I believe putting a spot light on any issue can fix it one day.

To my regret that this website is not Egyptian as we must discuss our issues and not attack those who are tackeling our mistakes and errors.

Just wanted to clarify...

We are in no way suggesting people don't travel to Egypt. It is a wonderful place & we have had many great times there on previous trips.

The Egyptian people are kind & warm-hearted and this site is not intended to be a reflection on them.

Neither is there any political or religious bias here. We hold no mallace.

But there is a danger, (to both tourists & Egyptians), that is taking away many innocent lives.

If people know of this, they can make informed decisions for themselves.

Ahmad Abdullah   8.5.2009  15:01 h

It is not logic to warn travellers because of that crash. you were in the desrt were we fight Israeli occupation, you always support against us ... so it is a normal accedent happened in such places in spite of our unsafe roads but we are so freindly nation and you are sure of that i think...

Ahmed .....LOVE EGYPT   8.5.2009  14:15 h

In all countries of the world are facing problems of traffic accidents, not only in Egypt but we have heard and how the death of such incidents by chilling .. But not because the incident is in place and warn citizens not to go to these places all that is happening is not the will of God and the will of man for that. Let us invite the Lord to have mercy on our heroes and monuments of our beloved, who were abducted by death in such incidents ...

Egypt is a country very beautiful and its people are friendly and welcome you anywhere in the land come to Egypt and found yourself in the warm reception of your loved Egyptian

ACCORDING to the Guinness Book of Records, the driving test in Egypt used to consist of merely demonstrating the ability to drive a few metres forward and in reverse.

It was made more difficult by the introduction into the test of requiring candidates to reverse between two cones. However, after "severe cone attrition", these were replaced with two white lines.

So sorry for your terrible experience. Unfortunately severe accidents happen EVERY SINGLE DAY.

We are ex UK - now resident in Egypt for many years. I read the Egyptian papers-it is horrible.

Our daughter was nearly killed almost 4 years ago in road accident in which we had sent a special driver through a friend-manager of limo company - the driver was sent day ahead to rest in Cairo as welive 5 hours away-unfortunately our 'friend' let us down and sent rested driver elsewhere-the driver our daughter received fell asleep at the wheel the company had had him on the road over 24 hours - she begged him to slow down, but he didn't and fell asleep, drove under a lorry.

When she awoke on the side of the road lying next to him in the dark in the middle of nowhere, she knew instantly he was dead. She couldn't see but managed to get injured lorry driver to ring me her mother . I went to search for her in darkness 150 miles away. Found her. She spent over 2 1/2 years having facial reconstrucitive, opthalmological, surgery and luckily they brought back her eyesight in Cairo.

She had to leave her year old twins and her good job here to have many ops and has never fully recovered either her physical nor her mental health. The driving is the worst in the world, although in this case the driver WAS NOT AT FAULT.

It was his employer, our 'so-called' friend who to this day has never apologised nor has his very wealthy company (top in Egypt) offered compensation. We are patient and although we have become accustomed to the abysmal driving standards, will never be able to accept the callous attitude of this company and its owners.

Our Bus accident has changed our lives forever. My wife and I alomst died in this horrific crash. My wife's left arm was torn off as the bus was flipping over and she suffered 3rd degree burns to half her body. She almost died in my arms that day. As by standers watched and did nothing to help anyone.

I want the whole world to know the only person that helped me save my wifes life was our British HERO Phillip Palmer.

God bless you and Thank you again my friend.

Take care.

Rick and Jenn.

Thank you for this web site and thank god you are still alive.

It's really a big problem in Egypt.

Speed and careless driving are major reasons for the big death toll in Egypt.

Bus company's and Egyptian government must do something about this .

I will contact the Egyptian transport minister and refer to this website , they will have to do something to save the lives of tourists and Egyptian people too. Thanks

Harleen Frasier   7.5.2009  16:02 h

Thanks for this website. It is very distressing that so many do die on the dangerous roads in Egypt each year and in the dangerous driving conditions.

My friends neighbor died just last week on a road in Alexandria.

I have friends considering Egypt for their next vacation, I think I'll forward your site to them first. Bless you.

Living in Cairo   7.5.2009  15:17 h

Sad Stories, horrific images, and now finally someone doing something about this madness.

I hope your story makes people aware just how dangerous crossing the roads ordriving here really is.

The time for apathy is over, it's now time for action to bring to an end this needless waste of life.

I will do all I can to spread your story.

Thank you for starting the ball rolling ; )

Paulette   7.5.2009  14:08 h

You have no idea how happy I am to see a site like this.

Maybe the more your site is spread throughout the world the more the Egyptian government will be embarrassed into doing something about the horror and complete lack of respect for human life on their roads.

Only when the dollar of tourism is affected will Egypt's ministers bring this carnage under control.

Spread your site and words far and wide. God bless you for starting the ball rolling and God bless the souls of the innocent dead victims of Egypt's roads.

Well done Phill & Sandra.

At long last somebody is willing to bring this to peoples attention. Personally I would rather walk than take a bus here in Egypt after what happened to you.

It really was a pleasure to bring food to the hospital for you as it gave us the opportunity to get to know you both.

From all at Picasso Cafe, (Sharm), we wish you great success with this site and come back to see us some day. X

Angela Malster.   17 May 2009

I can vividly remember the phone call I received from Phill, telling me he and Sandra had been in a coach crash in Egypt.

I new they were alive at least but nothing could prepare me for the full horror of the events of that day as they unfolded through the media or the despair of being so far away and unable to help them.

After a few weeks, through a succession of telephone calls, we finally got the news we had been waiting for - they were coming home!

Bill and I waited at the airport for their flight to land and after a while Phill came through pushing a battered Sandra in a wheelchair. I will never forget the look in his eyes partly relief they were finally home but more than that the shear horror he had experienced and the strain of having to keep up a brave front to help Sandra when she was in so much pain had seriously taken its toll.

If you came across an accident whilst you were out most of us would go into help mode and do our best to save lives if at all possible, but Phil had been in that accident he was dazed and disorientated and injured himself, it was dark and cold but after he had helped Sandra to safety he continued to help other people and save lives!!!

God spared them both that day and I am so grateful that he did. My brother is a HERO and I am so proud of him. Love you both Ang X
